Promoted by IBS and Cooplaf with support from Zoetis Foundation and Sebrae MS, the action contributes to the engagement of young people in the dairy industry

The result of the Young Entrepreneur Gymkhana of the Cooplaf Leite Project was announced at an award ceremony at the headquarters of the Mixed Agricultural Cooperative of Beef and Dairy Livestock and Family Agriculture (Cooplaf), in Terenos/MS, on December 8th. Representatives of Sebrae MS, Cooplaf and Instituto BioSistêmico (IBS) participated in the event.

Promoted by IBS and Cooplaf since September, the competition had the participation of 52 young people aged between 13 and 21 years old, children of producers assisted by IBS in the Cooplaf Leite Project in settlements in the Terenos region. The action is part of the scope of this project developed by IBS in partnership with Zoetis Foundation and Sebrae/MS, contributing to the goal of engaging young people and women.

Of the total number of participants in the gymkhana, four young people were ranked: 1st place – Isabela Fernanda Viana da Silva (18 years old), 2nd place - Larissa Gonçalves Garcia (15 years old), 3rd place – Bruno Souza de Oliveira (13 years old) and 4th place – Rayssa Rodrigues Ricardo. Those classified were awarded, respectively, with a laptop, a tablet, a smartphone and a kit with a backpack, notebook, calendar and an IBS mug. The four qualified became part of Cooplaf's youth committee that was created from the gymkhana.

The participants had to meet the goals of releasing zootechnical data from the properties in the CheckMilk application, in addition to participating in technical training aimed at the milk production chain. The presence and engagement in the tasks counted towards the score of the participants who had their results evaluated by a commission formed by IBS and Cooplaf.

“It is gratifying to see the movement of these young people learning to use the CheckMilk application, a tool that will facilitate the management of the property. This activity encourages cooperative entrepreneurship within the scope of the Cooplaf Leite Project, an initiative financed by Zoetis Foundation and Sebrae and carried out by IBS together with Cooplaf. We cannot fail to highlight the important role of these organizations that make this project possible”, highlights the corporate director of IBS, Luís Henrichsen during the award ceremony.

According to the veterinarian Bruna Bastos Ribeiro, an IBS consultant who participated in the coordination of the competition, actions like this should be encouraged, as they contribute to the engagement of young people in the activities on the property. “We feel that we must take care of the new generation to encourage family succession. With the use of technology and internet access, young people have more information and interest”, she points out.

“When young people have the opportunity to use a digital tool like CheckMilk, which helps them see the results of the production process, they are included in the control and management of the property. They assume a different view as an actor who is controlling the processes, not only as an operator anymore. This draws the attention of today's young people who like to feel included in these processes”, evaluates CheckMilk's technical coordinator, Matheus Henrique Magalhães, who conducted training on using the platform during the competition.

Experience for young people

For the first place, Isabela Fernanda, the gymkhana provided important learning and contributed to the choice of college she intends to attend. “I intend to do Zootechnics and with the gymkhana I learned how important this profession is in the management of a property”, she reports.

Larissa Gonçalves, second place, says she has come to understand more about dairy production in practice and about accounting. “I also realized that it is important to value what we have, because today it belongs to our parents and one day it will be ours. So we have to have knowledge to work and improve our area”, she points out.

Learning to operate the CheckMilk application was both challenging and rewarding for Bruno Souza, third place. “These months have been an incredible experience, a learning experience that I will take with me for the rest of my life. I want to thank the entire IBS team that helped us a lot, always ready to clarify our doubts”, he says.

For Raíssa Rodrigues, fourth place, the beginning of the competition was also challenging, but as the days went by and doubts were clarified, she adapted and met the goals of the competition more easily. “I really enjoyed participating and I want to help my father in the dairy business with everything I've learned”, she adds.

About the project

The Cooplaf Leite Project was conceived by the Instituto BioSistêmico with the main objective of promoting the development of dairy farming among the cooperative members of the Cooperativa Agrícola Mista da Pecuária de Corte e Leiteira and Agricultura Familiar (Cooplaf), an entity headquartered in the municipality of Terenos, in state of Mato Grosso do Sul, in the Center-West region of Brazil.

Executed by IBS, the initiative has the support of resources from the Zoetis Foundation and the Brazilian Support Service for Micro and Small Enterprises (Sebrae) in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. It also receives institutional and academic support from Unimar – University of Marília.

This is another livestock project carried out by the Instituto BioSistêmico that uses the CheckMilk methodology, which has a platform with a management system and application for technical teams and producers. The system facilitates project management and the application helps the producer on a daily basis, as an extension of the IBS consultancy that can be accessed at any time in the palm of the hand.
